Workplaces in new buildings or in new parts of such buildings are provided with safe waiting areas or equivalent areas on each level, the number and capacity of which vary according to the layout of the workplace and the number of disabled people likely to be present.
Safe waiting areas are areas or premises designed and fitted out to protect disabled people who need outside help to evacuate from the consequences of a fire before they do so. They must offer protection against smoke, flames, heat radiation and the ruin of the building for at least one hour. The client must ensure that the fire stability of the structure is compatible with the presence of safe waiting areas to ensure that the building does not collapse before people have been evacuated.
Safe waiting areas may be located in all areas accessible to disabled people, with the exception of basements and special risk areas as defined in articles R. 4227-22 and R. 4227-24.
