Article R4226-5 of the French Labour Code

The employer shall maintain all permanent electrical installations in compliance with the provisions relating to the design of electrical installations applicable on the date on which they were brought into service.

However, a new technical specification resulting from technical developments may be made applicable to existing installations, by order of the ministers responsible for labour and agriculture, if it makes it possible to prevent serious harm to the health and safety of workers.

Toutefois, une spécification technique nouvelle résultant de l’évolution technique peut être rendue applicable aux installations existantes, par arrêté des ministres chargés du travail et de l’agriculture, si elle permet de prévenir des atteintes graves à la santé et à la sécurité des travailleurs.
