Article R50-48 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

When the person is in a public or private establishment in which he or she is placed or detained pursuant to a judicial or administrative decision, proof of address may consist of a certificate issued by the person in charge of this establishment and sent by him or her to the competent authority.

This certificate is sent to the police station or local brigade responsible for the person’s place of residence if the person resides in France.

If the person concerned is of French nationality and lives abroad, this certificate should be sent to the French consulate or consular section of the French embassy closest to the person’s place of residence.

If the person concerned of foreign nationality resides abroad or if his or her place of residence is unknown, this certificate is sent to the service managing the file.

Lorsque la personne se trouve dans un établissement public ou privé dans lequel elle est placée ou retenue en application d’une décision judiciaire ou administrative, la justification d’adresse peut consister en une attestation délivrée par le responsable de cet établissement et adressée par lui à l’autorité compétente.


Cette attestation est adressée au commissariat de police ou à la brigade territoriale dont dépend le domicile de l’intéressé si celui-ci réside en France.


Si l’intéressé de nationalité française réside à l’étranger, cette attestation est adressée au consulat de France ou à la section consulaire de l’ambassade de France le plus proche de son domicile.


Si l’intéressé de nationalité étrangère réside à l’étranger ou que son domicile n’est pas connu, cette attestation est adressée au service gestionnaire du fichier.
