Article R6311-14 of the French Public Health Code

Automated external defibrillators, which for the purposes of this section are fully automatic external defibrillators and semi-automatic external defibrillators, are a medical device authorised to be placed on the market in accordance with the provisions of Title I of Book II of Part V of this Code and enabling :

1° Automatic analysis of the electrical activity of the myocardium of a person in circulatory arrest in order to detect ventricular fibrillation or certain ventricular tachycardias ;

2° Automatic loading of the device when the analysis mentioned above is positive and delivery of transthoracic external electric shocks of appropriate intensity, with the aim of restoring circulatory activity. Each shock is triggered either by the operator when using the semi-automatic defibrillator, or automatically when using the fully automatic defibrillator;

3° The recording of segments of myocardial electrical activity and data on the use of the device.

Les défibrillateurs automatisés externes, qui sont au sens de la présente section les défibrillateurs externes entièrement automatiques et les défibrillateurs externes semi-automatiques, sont un dispositif médical dont la mise sur le marché est autorisée suivant les dispositions du titre Ier du livre II de la partie V du présent code et permettant d’effectuer :

1° L’analyse automatique de l’activité électrique du myocarde d’une personne victime d’un arrêt circulatoire afin de déceler une fibrillation ventriculaire ou certaines tachycardies ventriculaires ;

2° Le chargement automatique de l’appareil lorsque l’analyse mentionnée ci-dessus est positive et la délivrance de chocs électriques externes transthoraciques, d’intensité appropriée, dans le but de parvenir à restaurer une activité circulatoire. Chaque choc est déclenché soit par l’opérateur en cas d’utilisation du défibrillateur semi-automatique, soit automatiquement en cas d’utilisation du défibrillateur entièrement automatique ;

3° L’enregistrement des segments de l’activité électrique du myocarde et des données de l’utilisation de l’appareil.
