Article R712-6 of the French Intellectual Property Code

As soon as it is received at the National Institute of Industrial Property, the filing gives rise to the allocation of a national number. Where it has not been possible to mention it on the filing receipt, this number shall be notified to the applicant.

Any subsequent correspondence or filing of documents which does not refer to the national number of the application for registration, which does not bear the signature of the applicant or his agent or which, where applicable, is not accompanied by proof of payment of the prescribed fee shall be declared inadmissible.

Dès sa réception à l’Institut national de la propriété industrielle, le dépôt donne lieu à l’attribution d’un numéro national. Lorsqu’il n’a pu être mentionné sur le récépissé du dépôt, ce numéro est notifié au déposant.

Est déclaré irrecevable toute correspondance ou dépôt ultérieur de pièces qui ne rappelle pas le numéro national de la demande d’enregistrement, qui ne porte pas la signature du déposant ou de son mandataire ou qui, le cas échéant, n’est pas accompagné de la justification du paiement de la redevance prescrite.
