Persons who have obtained the evidence of formal qualifications or authorisation required to practise as opticians must register with the department or body designated for this purpose by the Minister responsible for health before entering the profession. The organisations issuing the training certificates send these certificates to the service or organisation mentioned in article L. 4362-1 in the form of certified information.

Where available, the certified information referred to in Article L. 4362-1-1 shall serve as supporting documents for the fulfilment of the obligations set out in Article L. 4362-1.

The diplomas, certificates and other evidence of formal qualifications referred to in Article L. 4362-1 are the optician-mutician advanced technician’s certificate and the optician-mutician professional certificate, as well as any other evidence of formal qualifications designated by order of the ministers responsible for trade, the economy and finance, higher education and health. Notwithstanding the provisions of article L. 4362-1, holders of a diploma from a national vocational school, optics and eyewear section, or a certificate from the Ecole des Métiers d’Optique may practise the profession of optician-mutician.

Opticians who are nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area and who are established and legally practising the activities of opticians in a Member State or a State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area may perform professional acts in France, on a temporary and occasional basis, without having to register in accordance…

When the authorisation to practise or the declaration of provision of services is issued, the optician must have the language skills required to practise the profession and those relating to the systems of weights and measures used in France. The language proficiency test must be proportionate to the activity to be carried out and must be carried out once the professional qualification has been recognised.

The dispensing of corrective lenses for ametropia and corrective ocular contact lenses is reserved for persons authorised to practise the profession of optician-mutician, under the conditions laid down in this chapter.

The conditions for issuing corrective ocular contact lenses to a first-time wearer are determined by decree in the Conseil d’Etat.
