Section 6: Participation of midwives in medically assisted procreation activities

Under the conditions laid down in this section, midwives participate in the clinical activities of medically assisted procreation carried out with or without a third party donor, as well as in gamete donation and embryo reception activities. Midwives are part of the multidisciplinary clinical-biological medical team mentioned in the first paragraph of article L. 2141-10. In this capacity, they take part in the individual interviews mentioned in the same article.

The midwives provide couples with the information and support they need at every stage of the medically assisted reproduction procedure, in conjunction with the centre’s doctors. Midwives may contribute to the information and clinical, biological and ultrasound monitoring of the oocyte donor. They may be involved in the procedure for embryo reception by a third party couple by taking part in the interview provided for in the first paragraph of article R. 2141-2. They may be responsible for the medical monitoring and support of the woman receiving the embryo.

For each couple, the midwives help to ensure that the joint medical record referred to in the second paragraph of Article R. 2142-8 is properly kept. When they work in a medically assisted procreation centre, they participate in the evaluation of the centre’s activities.
