Section 8: Participation of midwives in the screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections

Screening for the sexually transmitted infections listed in table I of appendix 41-3 may be prescribed by midwives for their patients and partners, in accordance with current recommendations. If the screening result is positive, the person tested is referred immediately by the midwife to a doctor or specialist service.

Screening for the sexually transmitted infections listed in table II of appendix 41-3 may be prescribed, in accordance with current recommendations, by midwives for their patients and their partners. Where the screening result is positive, the midwife prescribes the first-line treatment, in accordance with current recommendations, to the person or persons who have tested positive and in accordance with the list provided for in article L. 4151-4.

The sexually transmitted infections listed in table III of appendix 41-3 may be treated by midwives as a first-line treatment, in accordance with current recommendations, for their patients and their patients’ partners, and in accordance with the list provided for in article L. 4151-4.

Screening for the sexually transmitted infections listed in table IV of appendix 41-3 may be prescribed, in accordance with current recommendations, for their patients’ partners, with immediate referral to a doctor or specialist service.

Midwives can screen their patients for human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in line with current recommendations.
