Speech therapy consists of 1° Preventing, assessing and treating, as early as possible, by means of re-education activities constituting treatment, voice, articulation and speech disorders, as well as disorders associated with the understanding of oral and written language and its expression; 2° To provide training in other forms of non-verbal communication to complement or supplement these functions.

As part of the medical prescription, the speech and language therapist draws up an assessment which includes the speech and language therapy diagnosis, the objectives and the treatment plan. Speech and language therapy is accompanied by appropriate advice for the patient’s immediate environment. Speech and language therapists may propose, organise or participate in prevention, health education or screening activities. They may take part in initial and continuing training for speech and language therapists and possibly other professionals, in the fight against illiteracy or in research in the field of speech and language therapy.
