Haemodialysis techniques based on the intravenous reinjection of a replacement fluid produced extemporaneously from the dialysate may only be used in haemodialysis centres and medical dialysis units.

Haemodialysis in a self-dialysis unit can be either simple self-dialysis or assisted self-dialysis. Simple self-dialysis is offered to patients who have been trained in haemodialysis and are able to carry out all the procedures required for their treatment themselves. Home haemodialysis is offered to patients who have been trained in haemodialysis and are able to carry out all the procedures necessary for their treatment, in the presence of a family member who can provide assistance.

Peritoneal dialysis is carried out at home or in the place where the patient resides, even temporarily. For the purposes of this provision, a long-term care facility or retirement home is considered to be the patient’s place of residence.
