Section 13: Interventional activity under medical imaging in cardiology

Interventional cardiology imaging includes all diagnostic or therapeutic cardiology procedures performed percutaneously, transparietally or intra-luminally on one or more inaccessible targets under satisfactory quality and safety conditions without the use of imaging guidance.

Interventional cardiology imaging is carried out in three ways: 1° Interventional arrhythmology; 2° Congenital heart disease excluding arrhythmology; 3° Ischaemic and structural heart disease in adults.

The “interventional rhythmology” modality comprises the following entries: 1° Option A, comprising, in adults, interventional diagnostic electrophysiology procedures and procedures for fitting single and dual chamber pace makers with leads; 2° Option B, comprising, in adults, in addition to the procedures authorised in option A, procedures for right atrial and atrioventricular ablation, and for fitting defibrillators and multisite pacemakers; 3° Category C, including, in addition to the procedures authorised under…

Authorisation for the “interventional rhythmology” modality, categories B, C and D, can only be granted if the holder has authorisation for the “adult ischaemic and structural heart disease” modality.

Authorisation for the “interventional rhythmology” modality, mention D, only allows rhythmology procedures to be performed on patients with complex congenital heart disease if the holder has authorisation for the “congenital heart disease excluding rhythmology” modality.

By way of derogation, the condition mentioned in article R. 6123-130-1 is not required for sites performing exclusively paediatric interventional rhythmology. Authorisation to carry out interventional rhythmology activity in category C, when this is exclusively paediatric, may only be granted if the holder has authorisation for the “congenital cardiopathies excluding rhythmology” modality.

The authorisation holder ensures continuity of care. The holder of the authorisation for the “ischaemic and structural heart disease in adults” modality ensures that patients are diagnosed and treated around the clock, every day of the year, in liaison with the emergency medical structures mentioned in article R. 6123-1.
