Section 16: Medical activity

The activity of medicine consists of the general or specialised care, for diagnostic, therapeutic or palliative purposes, of patients whose state of health requires care or monitoring of a medical nature, on a full or part-time inpatient basis. This activity includes, where appropriate, the performance of technical procedures for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It includes preventive and health education activities.

Part-time hospitalisation corresponds to a period of care less than or equal to twelve hours per twenty-four hours, not requiring accommodation, for patients whose state of health is compatible with this type of care. The services provided are similar in nature, complexity and the medical supervision they require to those normally provided as part of full-time hospitalisation.

I. – The type of patients cared for, adults or children and adolescents, is specified in the application for authorisation and mentioned in the authorisation decision. If the authorisation decision refers only to the care of adult patients, the holder is not authorised to care for children and adolescents. The holder of the authorisation for medicine has at its disposal : 1° Full-time and part-time hospitalisation facilities, adapted to the patient’s age and autonomy. The holder of the medical authorisation has access, within a timeframe compatible with the safety of care, on site or by agreement, to : 1° Medical imaging examinations, in particular ultrasound, medical scanners and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging equipment; 2° Medical biology and anatomopathology examinations.

The authorisation holder organises continuity of care for hospitalised patients by guaranteeing the intervention of a doctor within a timeframe compatible with the safety of care. This organisation may be common to several sites of the same health care organisation or several health care organisations, provided that these sites are located close to each other.

The authorisation holder participates, where necessary, in the permanent care service referred to in Article L. 6111-1-3.

The holder of a medical authorisation for the care of children and adolescents participates in the territorial paediatric care network, which aims to strengthen cooperation in order to facilitate continuity in patient care and meet the need for expertise. It also participates in the paediatric critical care network.
