In surgical and medical nursing homes, inpatient rooms must not contain more than six beds. These must be accessible from three sides and the distance between two beds must not be less than one metre. In all establishments, ventilation must be permanent and continuous so as to function in all seasons without causing discomfort to patients. Central heating is required in all establishments. The temperature of hospitalised patients’ rooms must never be lower than 18 degrees. Electric lighting must be provided so that the lights can be switched off at night.

In all establishments, the procedures used for washing linen must ensure effective disinfection.

In all establishments, the kitchen and food services must be proportionate to the capacity of the hospital. Every effort must be made to ensure that meals are served hot. Menus must be posted daily and kept for three months.
