Sub-paragraph 2: Vehicles used for transporting bodies after coffining (R).

Every vehicle used for transporting a body after coffining has a burial compartment designed to accommodate one or more coffins, separated in a watertight manner from the part of the passenger compartment reserved for the driver and passengers. The burial compartment may consist of a rigid, closed, watertight box that is immovable in relation to the body of the vehicle, completely covering the coffin.

If it includes glazed sections, the burial compartment must include a visual obscuring process for the purposes of medium and long distance transport. The internal surface of the burial compartment must be smooth, impermeable and capable of being washed and disinfected on a daily basis without corrosion. The distinctive signs of the user of the vehicle transporting the body after coffining and of other vehicles participating in funeral convoys are limited to three per vehicle, each with a surface area of no more than 10 square decimetres.

I. – Any person offering for sale a new or second-hand vehicle for transporting the body after coffining is required to have it checked, at their own expense, for compliance with the requirements of articles D. 2223-116 to D. 2223-120 with a third-party inspection body accredited for these activities by the Comité français d’accréditation (COFRAC) or by any other accreditation body that is a signatory to the multilateral recognition agreement…

Vehicles used to transport bodies after coffining are subject to a compliance inspection every three years at most. The prefect shall designate the body or bodies responsible for carrying out the compliance inspection. The prefect may at any time order that the vehicle undergo a compliance inspection within a period that he prescribes, as necessary.
