Subsection 2: Start-up and shut-down controls

Work equipment may only be started by an operator actuating the control device provided for this purpose, unless such start-up, if obtained otherwise, presents no risk to the operators concerned. This provision does not apply to the starting of work equipment resulting from the normal sequence of an automatic cycle.

The operating parts of work equipment must be clearly visible and identifiable. Where necessary, they are appropriately marked.

Operating devices must be located outside danger zones, except where this is impossible or necessary, for example in the case of an emergency stop device or an adjustment or training console. They must be located in such a way that their operation cannot give rise to additional risks.

The operating devices are chosen to avoid any unintentional operation which could have dangerous effects. They are arranged in such a way as to allow safe, rapid and unambiguous operation.

The start-up devices are arranged in such a way that the operator is able, from their position, to ensure that there are no people in the danger zones. Where this is not possible, any start-up is automatically preceded by an audible or visual warning signal. All work equipment is fitted with the necessary controls to enable it to be shut down safely.

Each workstation or part of the work equipment is fitted with an operating device enabling either all the work equipment or only part of it to be stopped, depending on the existing risks, so that the operator is in a safe situation.
