Section 3: Additional requirements for mobile work equipment

Self-propelled mobile work equipment is fitted with a braking and stopping device. Where safety so requires, particularly in the case of equipment with a heavily loaded braking system, an emergency device operated by easily accessible controls or by automatic systems enables braking and stopping in the event of failure of the main device.

Mobile work equipment comprising parts which, during work, exceed the clearance gauge must, during transport or movement, be fitted with the necessary devices to hold these parts in a safe position. These devices enable the driver to check without difficulty, before moving or transporting the equipment, that the components concerned are actually held in a safe position.

Where the driver’s direct field of vision is insufficient, self-propelled mobile work equipment is fitted with auxiliary devices to improve visibility. When this equipment is used at night or in dark places, it is fitted with lighting appropriate to the work to be carried out.

Remotely controlled self-propelled mobile work equipment must be fitted with a device enabling it to stop automatically when it leaves the field of control. If it is liable to collide with workers, such equipment or equipment operating without a driver must be fitted with protective devices or guards against such risks, unless other appropriate devices are in place to control the risk of collision.

In the event of simultaneous movement of several pieces of self-propelled mobile work equipment running on rails, these pieces of equipment are fitted with means to reduce the consequences of a possible collision.

Self-propelled mobile work equipment which, by itself or because of its trailers or load, presents a fire hazard, must be fitted with fire-fighting equipment, unless the place of use is equipped with such equipment in sufficiently close proximity.
