Chapter II: Medical biology laboratory

A medical biology laboratory is a structure within which medical biology examinations are carried out. Subject to the territorial location rules mentioned in Article L. 6222-5, the same laboratory may be located on one or more sites.

A medical biology laboratory may also carry out biological activities relating to medically assisted procreation and pathological anatomy and cytology examinations. The medical biology laboratory participates in public health missions. It also participates in the availability of medical biology services defined in the zone determined in application of b of 2° of article L. 1434-9. Medical biology facilities which carry out medical biology examinations and which come under the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of the Interior are not subject, during external operations, to the provisions of this book.

Only organisations that meet the conditions laid down in this book may use the designation of medical biology laboratory.

A cooperation contract is a contract signed between several medical biology laboratories, located in the same area determined in application of b of 2° of Article L. 1434-9 or in adjacent areas, with a view to pooling resources for the performance of specific medical biology tests.
