Article 1038 of the French Civil Code

Any alienation, that even by sale with the option of redemption or by exchange, made by the testator of all or part of the thing bequeathed, shall entail the revocation of the legacy for all that has been alienated, even if the subsequent alienation is null and void, and the object has reverted to the testator.

Toute aliénation, celle même par vente avec faculté de rachat ou par échange, que fera le testateur de tout ou de partie de la chose léguée, emportera la révocation du legs pour tout ce qui a été aliéné, encore que l’aliénation postérieure soit nulle, et que l’objet soit rentré dans la main du testateur.
