Article 1366 of the French Code of civil procedure

The notary may ask the assigned judge to summon the parties or their representatives, in his presence, to attempt conciliation between them.

Failing conciliation, the assigned judge shall refer the parties to the notary, who shall draw up a report containing the parties’ respective statements and a draft liquidation statement.

Le notaire peut demander au juge commis de convoquer les parties ou leurs représentants, en sa présence, pour tenter une conciliation entre elles.

A défaut de conciliation, le juge commis renvoie les parties devant le notaire, qui établit un procès-verbal reprenant les dires respectifs des parties ainsi qu’un projet d’état liquidatif.
