Article 1378-2 of the French Civil Code

A notation of a payment or other cause of discharge made by the creditor on an original document of title which has always remained in his possession is equivalent to a simple presumption of discharge of the debtor.

The same applies to a notation made on the duplicate of a document of title or receipt, provided that the duplicate is in the hands of the debtor.

La mention d’un paiement ou d’une autre cause de libération portée par le créancier sur un titre original qui est toujours resté en sa possession vaut présomption simple de libération du débiteur.

Il en est de même de la mention portée sur le double d’un titre ou d’une quittance, pourvu que ce double soit entre les mains du débiteur.
