Article 1483 of the French Civil Code

Each of the spouses may only be sued for half of the debts that had entered the community on the part of his or her spouse.

After the partition and except in the case of concealment, he or she is only liable up to the amount of his or her emolument provided that there has been an inventory, and subject to rendering an account both of the contents of this inventory and of what has fallen to him or her through the partition as well as of the common liabilities already paid.

Chacun des époux ne peut être poursuivi que pour la moitié des dettes qui étaient entrées en communauté du chef de son conjoint.

Après le partage et sauf en cas de recel, il n’en est tenu que jusqu’à concurrence de son émolument pourvu qu’il y ait eu inventaire, et à charge de rendre compte tant du contenu de cet inventaire que de ce qui lui est échu par le partage ainsi que du passif commun déjà acquitté.
