Article 1485 of the French Civil Code

Each of the spouses contributes half to the community debts for which no recompense was due, as well as to the costs of sealing, inventory, sale of furniture, liquidation, licitation and partition.

He alone bears the debts that had become common only unless recompense is payable by him.

Chacun des époux contribue pour moitié aux dettes de communauté pour lesquelles il n’était pas dû de récompense, ainsi qu’aux frais de scellé, inventaire, vente de mobilier, liquidation, licitation et partage.

Il supporte seul les dettes qui n’étaient devenues communes que sauf récompense à sa charge.
