Article 1979 of the French Civil Code

The settlor cannot release himself from the payment of the annuity, by offering to repay the capital, and by renouncing the recovery of the arrears paid; he is bound to serve the annuity during the whole life of the person or persons on whose life the annuity was constituted, whatever the duration of the life of these persons, and whatever onerous the service of the annuity may have become.

Le constituant ne peut se libérer du paiement de la rente, en offrant de rembourser le capital, et en renonçant à la répétition des arrérages payés ; il est tenu de servir la rente pendant toute la vie de la personne ou des personnes sur la tête desquelles la rente a été constituée, quelle que soit la durée de la vie de ces personnes, et quelque onéreux qu’ait pu devenir le service de la rente.
