Article 2277 of the French Civil Code

If the present possessor of the stolen or lost thing has purchased it at a fair or market, or at a public sale, or from a merchant selling such things, the original owner may only have it returned by reimbursing the possessor for the price it cost him.

A lessor who claims, by virtue of article 2332, the furniture moved without his consent and which was purchased under the same conditions must also reimburse the buyer for the price they cost him.

Si le possesseur actuel de la chose volée ou perdue l’a achetée dans une foire ou dans un marché, ou dans une vente publique, ou d’un marchand vendant des choses pareilles, le propriétaire originaire ne peut se la faire rendre qu’en remboursant au possesseur le prix qu’elle lui a coûté.

Le bailleur qui revendique, en vertu de l’article 2332, les meubles déplacés sans son consentement et qui ont été achetés dans les mêmes conditions doit également rembourser à l’acheteur le prix qu’ils lui ont coûté.
