Article 24 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

In addition to the powers mentioned in Article 22 of this code and to article L. 521-1 of the Code de la sécurité intérieure, gardes champêtres (rural rangers) are responsible for investigating and recording offences and contraventions against property located in the communes for which they are sworn in, under the same conditions as those set out for forestry offences in articles L. 161-14 to L. 161-18 of the Forestry Code as well as, in environmental matters, to article L. 172-8 of the French Environment Code.

Outre les compétences mentionnées à l’article 22 du présent code et à l’article L. 521-1 du code de la sécurité intérieure, les gardes champêtres recherchent et constatent par procès-verbal les délits et contraventions qui portent atteinte aux propriétés situées dans les communes pour lesquelles ils sont assermentés, dans les mêmes conditions que celles énoncées, en matière d’infractions forestières, aux articles L. 161-14 à L. 161-18 du code forestier ainsi que, en matière environnementale, à l’article L. 172-8 du code de l’environnement.
