Article 270 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

If the accused is at large or fails to appear, he may be tried in absentia in accordance with the provisions of Chapter VIII of this Title.

Where the accused is at large, however, the date of the hearing at which he is to be tried in absentia must be served on him at his last known address or at a bailiff’s office or, failing that, at the public prosecutor’s office of the judicial court where the assize court is sitting, at least ten days before the start of the hearing.

Si l’accusé est en fuite ou ne se présente pas, il peut être jugé par défaut conformément aux dispositions du chapitre VIII du présent titre.

Lorsque l’accusé est en fuite, la date de l’audience au cours de laquelle il doit être jugé par défaut doit toutefois lui être signifiée à son dernier domicile connu ou à étude d’huissier de justice ou, à défaut, au parquet du procureur de la République du tribunal judiciaire où siège la cour d’assises, au moins dix jours avant le début de l’audience.
