Article 31-2 of the French Civil Code

The certificate of nationality indicates, with reference to Chapters II, III, IV and VII of this Title, the legal provision by virtue of which the person concerned has the status of French national, as well as the documents which made it possible to establish this. It is authentic until proven otherwise.

For the establishment of a certificate of nationality, the director of the judicial registry services of the judicial court may presume, in the absence of other elements, that the civil status records drawn up abroad and which are produced before him have the effects that French law would have attached to them.

Le certificat de nationalité indique, en se référant aux chapitres II, III, IV et VII du présent titre, la disposition légale en vertu de laquelle l’intéressé a la qualité de Français, ainsi que les documents qui ont permis de l’établir. Il fait foi jusqu’à preuve du contraire.

Pour l’établissement d’un certificat de nationalité, le directeur des services de greffe judiciaires du tribunal judiciaire pourra présumer, à défaut d’autres éléments, que les actes d’état civil dressés à l’étranger et qui sont produits devant lui emportent les effets que la loi française y aurait attachés.
