Article 515 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The court may, on the appeal of the public prosecutor, either confirm the judgment or reverse it in whole or in part in a manner favourable or unfavourable to the accused.

The court may not, on the sole appeal of the accused, the person civilly liable, the civil party or the insurer of any of these persons, aggravate the fate of the appellant.

The civil party may not, on appeal, make any new claim; however, it may request an increase in damages for loss suffered since the decision at first instance.

Article 515

La cour peut, sur l’appel du ministère public, soit confirmer le jugement, soit l’infirmer en tout ou en partie dans un sens favorable ou défavorable au prévenu.

La cour ne peut, sur le seul appel du prévenu, du civilement responsable, de la partie civile ou de l’assureur de l’une de ces personnes, aggraver le sort de l’appelant.

La partie civile ne peut, en cause d’appel, former aucune demande nouvelle ; toutefois elle peut demander une augmentation des dommages-intérêts pour le préjudice souffert depuis la décision de première instance.
