Article 696-44 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

In the case of criminal proceedings instituted abroad, where a foreign government deems it necessary to serve a procedural document or a judgment on an individual residing on French territory, the document shall be transmitted in accordance with the forms provided for in articles 696-8 and 696-9, accompanied, where applicable, by a French translation. Service is made personally, at the request of the public prosecutor. The original acknowledging service is returned by the same means to the requesting government.

Au cas de poursuites répressives exercées à l’étranger, lorsqu’un gouvernement étranger juge nécessaire la notification d’un acte de procédure ou d’un jugement à un individu résidant sur le territoire français, la pièce est transmise suivant les formes prévues aux articles 696-8 et 696-9, accompagnée, le cas échéant, d’une traduction française. La signification est faite à personne, à la requête du ministère public. L’original constatant la notification est renvoyé par la même voie au gouvernement requérant.
