Article 743 of the French Civil Code

In the direct line, as many degrees are counted as there are generations between the persons: thus, the child is, with regard to the father and mother, in the first degree, the grandson or granddaughter in the second; and conversely the father and mother with regard to the child and the forefathers with regard to the grandson or granddaughter; and so on.

In collateral lines, the degrees are counted by generation, from one of the parents up to and not including the common author, and from the latter to the other parent.

Thus, brothers and sisters are in the second degree; uncle or aunt and nephew or niece are in the third degree; first cousins in the fourth; so on.

En ligne directe, on compte autant de degrés qu’il y a de générations entre les personnes : ainsi, l’enfant est, à l’égard du père et de la mère, au premier degré, le petit-fils ou la petite-fille au second ; et réciproquement du père et de la mère à l’égard de l’enfant et des aïeuls à l’égard du petit-fils ou de la petite-fille ; ainsi de suite.

En ligne collatérale, les degrés se comptent par génération, depuis l’un des parents jusques et non compris l’auteur commun, et depuis celui-ci jusqu’à l’autre parent.

Ainsi, les frères et sœurs sont au deuxième degré ; l’oncle ou la tante et le neveu ou la nièce sont au troisième degré ; les cousins germains et cousines germaines au quatrième ; ainsi de suite.
