Article 827 of the French Civil Code

The mass is divided by head. However, it is made by strain when there is reason for representation. Once division by stock has been effected, a separate distribution is made, where applicable, between the heirs of each stock.

Le partage de la masse s’opère par tête. Toutefois, il se fait par souche quand il y a lieu à représentation. Une fois opéré le partage par souche, une répartition distincte est opérée, le cas échéant, entre les héritiers de chaque souche.
