Article L. 310-1 of the French Commercial Code
Sales accompanied or preceded by advertising and announced as aiming, through a reduction in price, at the accelerated disposal of all or part of the goods of a commercial establishment following a decision, whatever the cause, to cease, seasonally suspend or change the activity, or to substantially alter the operating conditions, are deemed to be liquidations.
Liquidation operations are subject to prior declaration to the administrative authority responsible for the place of liquidation. This declaration must state the reason for the liquidation and its duration, which may not exceed two months. It is accompanied by an inventory of the goods to be liquidated. Where the event giving rise to the liquidation has not occurred within six months of the declaration, the declarant is required to inform the competent administrative authority.
During the period of liquidation, it is forbidden to offer for sale any goods other than those listed in the inventory on the basis of which the prior declaration was lodged.
