Article D210-3 of the French Cinema and Moving Image Code

An art house film is one that meets at least one of the following criteria:
1° A cinematographic work that is research-based or new in the cinematographic field;
2° A cinematographic work that has undeniable qualities but has not obtained the audience it deserved;
3° A cinematographic work that reflects the life of countries whose cinematographic production is not widely distributed in France;
4° A revival of a film of artistic or historical interest, and in particular a film considered to be a “classic of the screen”;
5° A short-lived film aimed at renewing cinematographic entertainment through its quality and choice.

Article D210-3

L’œuvre cinématographique d’art et d’essai est celle répondant à l’une au moins des caractéristiques suivantes :
1° Œuvre cinématographique ayant un caractère de recherche ou de nouveauté dans le domaine cinématographique ;
2° Œuvre cinématographique présentant d’incontestables qualités mais n’ayant pas obtenu l’audience qu’elle méritait ;
3° Œuvre cinématographique reflétant la vie de pays dont la production cinématographique est peu diffusée en France ;
4° Œuvre cinématographique de reprise présentant un intérêt artistique ou historique, et notamment œuvre cinématographique considérée comme ” classique de l’écran ” ;
5° Œuvre cinématographique de courte durée tendant à renouveler par sa qualité et son choix le spectacle cinématographique.
