Article D4362-12 of the French Public Health Code

The dispensing of ametropia corrective lenses by an optician is subject to the presentation or verification of the existence of a medical or orthoptic prescription for these products.

The medical prescription is valid for :

-one year, for patients under the age of 16 ;

-five years, for patients aged between 16 and 42;

-three years, for patients aged over 42.

The orthoptic prescription is valid for two years.

A copy of this prescription, where applicable modified in accordance with article R. 4342-8-1, is kept by the optician until the expiry of its validity, unless the patient objects, and the original is kept by the patient.

La délivrance des verres correcteurs d’amétropie par un opticien-lunetier est subordonnée à la présentation ou la vérification de l’existence d’une ordonnance médicale ou orthoptique comportant la prescription de ces produits.

La durée de validité de l’ordonnance médicale est fixée à :

-un an, pour les patients âgés de moins de 16 ans ;

-cinq ans, pour les patients âgés de 16 à 42 ans ;

-trois ans, pour les patients âgés de plus de 42 ans.

La durée de validité de l’ordonnance orthoptique est fixée à deux ans.

Une copie de cette ordonnance, le cas échéant modifiée en application de l’article R. 4342-8-1 est conservée par l’opticien-lunetier jusqu’à l’expiration de sa validité, sauf opposition du patient, et l’original est conservé par ce dernier.
