When a medical biology test is carried out, each biological sample is identified as soon as it is taken, by computer or manually, by the following information:
1° Patient identification: surname, also known as birth name, first forename, date of birth, gender and identification number. This identification number, which is specific to each patient and distinct from the social security number, is known or allocated by the medical biology laboratory before the sample is taken. However, when the patient is hospitalised, this number is the patient’s identification number in the health establishment or army hospital;
2° Identification of the sampling health professional: surname, first name, professional capacity and professional identification number;
3° Identification of each sample: nature of the examination, date and time of sampling.
The identification details that appear on the label affixed to the sample are defined by the laboratory as part of its pre-analytical procedures. The patient identification number is one of these elements.
When a sample is transmitted under the provisions of Article L. 6211-19, the two laboratories ensure that the sample can be traced by means of the patient identification number.
