Alternate members are elected under the same conditions as the full members and in the same ballot.
The number of alternate members is set by regulation.
These alternate members replace the full members who are prevented from sitting or who cease to hold office for any reason before the end of their term. In the latter case, the term of office of the alternate members is that which would have remained until the date on which the term of office of those whom they replace would have expired.
In the case of doctors and dental surgeons, the alternate member replacing the full member shall be of the same gender as the full member.
