Article L4130-2 of the French Public Health Code

The tasks of the primary care or secondary care medical specialist include the following:

1° Completing patient care by carrying out an expert diagnostic and therapeutic analysis, implementing appropriate treatment and monitoring patients, in accordance with the procedures specific to the skills of each discipline;

2° Contributing to prevention and health education;

3° Participating in the public service mission of permanent care;

4° Contributing to the reception and training of trainees in the second and third cycles of medical studies.

The secondary care specialist may act as a correspondent doctor, in conjunction with the general practitioner, for the joint monitoring of the patient and the development of the care plan.

The primary or secondary care specialist works in cooperation with health establishments and helps to prevent unnecessary or avoidable hospitalisation.

Les missions du médecin spécialiste de premier ou de deuxième recours comprennent les actions suivantes :

1° Compléter la prise en charge du patient par la réalisation d’une analyse diagnostique et thérapeutique d’expertise, la mise en œuvre du traitement approprié ainsi que le suivi des patients, selon des modalités propres aux compétences de chaque discipline ;

2° Contribuer à la prévention et à l’éducation pour la santé ;

3° Participer à la mission de service public de permanence des soins ;

4° Contribuer à l’accueil et à la formation des stagiaires de deuxième et troisième cycles d’études médicales.

Le médecin spécialiste de deuxième recours peut intervenir en tant que médecin correspondant, en lien avec le médecin généraliste, pour le suivi conjoint du patient et l’élaboration du projet de soins.

Le médecin spécialiste de premier ou de deuxième recours intervient en coopération avec les établissements de santé et contribue à la prévention des hospitalisations inutiles ou évitables.
