Article L4151-4 of the French Public Health Code

Midwives may prescribe medical devices and medicinal products, the list of which is drawn up by the administrative authority and, where appropriate, updated following the placing on the market of a new medical device or medicinal product necessary for the practice of the profession of midwife, as well as examinations strictly necessary for the practice of their profession. They may also prescribe nicotine substitutes to all persons who regularly live with the pregnant woman or child until the end of the postnatal period, or who look after the child.

They may prescribe screening for sexually transmitted infections and treatment for these infections for their patients and their patients’ partners, in accordance with a list drawn up by regulation.

Les sages-femmes peuvent prescrire les dispositifs médicaux et médicaments, dont la liste est fixée par l’autorité administrative, et, le cas échéant, mise à jour après la mise sur le marché d’un nouveau dispositif médical ou médicament nécessaire à l’exercice de la profession de sage-femme, ainsi que les examens strictement nécessaires à l’exercice de leur profession. Elles peuvent également prescrire des substituts nicotiniques à toutes les personnes qui vivent régulièrement dans l’entourage de la femme enceinte ou de l’enfant jusqu’au terme de la période postnatale ou assurent la garde de ce dernier.

Elles peuvent prescrire à leurs patientes et aux partenaires de leurs patientes le dépistage d’infections sexuellement transmissibles et les traitements de ces infections figurant sur une liste arrêtée par voie réglementaire.
