Article L421-6 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

As an exception to article L. 433-6, a foreign national who applies for a multi-annual residence permit bearing the wording “entrepreneur/self-employed” and who holds a residence permit issued for another reason is granted a one-year temporary residence permit bearing the wording requested when the conditions for issuing this permit are met.
At the end of the validity period of this card, if they continue to meet the conditions for its issue, they will receive, at their request, a multi-annual residence card bearing the same wording.
When the foreign national applies for the issue of a first multi-annual residence permit under the conditions set out in this article, they must also provide proof of compliance with the conditions set out in 1° of article L. 433-4.

Par dérogation à l’article L. 433-6, l’étranger qui sollicite la délivrance d’une carte de séjour pluriannuelle portant la mention ” entrepreneur/ profession libérale ” et qui est titulaire d’une carte de séjour délivrée pour un autre motif bénéficie d’une carte de séjour temporaire d’une durée d’un an portant la mention demandée lorsque les conditions de délivrance de cette carte sont remplies.
A l’expiration de la durée de validité de cette carte, s’il continue à en remplir les conditions de délivrance, il bénéficie, à sa demande, d’une carte de séjour pluriannuelle portant la même mention.
Lorsque l’étranger sollicite la délivrance d’une première carte de séjour pluriannuelle dans les conditions prévues au présent article, il doit en outre justifier du respect des conditions prévues au 1° de l’article L. 433-4.
