Article L426-3 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

A foreign national who is serving or has served in the Foreign Legion, with at least three years’ service in the French army, and who holds a certificate of good conduct, shall be issued with a ten-year resident card.
If the certificate of good conduct is withdrawn for desertion or subsequent behaviour unsuited to the requirements of the armed forces, the resident card provided for in the first paragraph may be withdrawn.

L’étranger qui sert ou a servi dans la Légion étrangère, comptant au moins trois ans de services dans l’armée française, et qui est titulaire du certificat de bonne conduite, se voit délivrer une carte de résident d’une durée de dix ans.
S’il fait l’objet d’un retrait du certificat de bonne conduite pour cause de désertion ou de comportement ultérieur inadapté aux exigences des forces armées, la carte de résident prévue au premier alinéa peut lui être retirée.
