Article L5221-8 of the French Labour Code

The employer must check with the relevant local authorities that the foreign national holds the document authorising him/her to work in France, unless the foreign national is registered on the list of jobseekers kept by the institution referred to in article L. 5312-1.

L’employeur s’assure auprès des administrations territorialement compétentes de l’existence du titre autorisant l’étranger à exercer une activité salariée en France, sauf si cet étranger est inscrit sur la liste des demandeurs d’emploi tenue par l’institution mentionnée à l’article L. 5312-1.
