Article L812-4 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

The summary inspection of the vehicle provided for in article L. 812-3 may only be carried out with the agreement of the driver or, failing this, on the instructions of the public prosecutor. Pending instructions from the public prosecutor, the vehicle may be immobilised for a period not exceeding four hours.
The inspection, the duration of which is limited to the time strictly necessary, takes place in the presence of the driver and gives rise to the drafting of a report mentioning the dates and times of the start and end of the operations. A copy of this report is given to the driver and another is immediately forwarded to the public prosecutor.

Article L812-4

Il ne peut être procédé à la visite sommaire du véhicule prévue à l’article L. 812-3 qu’avec l’accord du conducteur ou, à défaut, sur instructions du procureur de la République. Dans l’attente des instructions du procureur de la République, le véhicule peut être immobilisé pour une durée qui ne peut excéder quatre heures.
La visite, dont la durée est limitée au temps strictement nécessaire, se déroule en présence du conducteur et donne lieu à l’établissement d’un procès-verbal mentionnant les dates et heures du début et de la fin des opérations. Un exemplaire de ce procès-verbal est remis au conducteur et un autre transmis sans délai au procureur de la République.
