Article LO6222-2 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

In the event of the seat of President becoming vacant for any reason whatsoever, the duties of President shall be temporarily exercised by a Vice-President, in the order of appointment, and, failing this, by a Territorial Councillor designated by the Council. The Executive Council shall be renewed within one month, in accordance with the procedures set out in article LO 6222-6.

However, before this renewal, any elections that may be necessary to complete the territorial council shall be held.

If, after the supplementary elections, new vacancies occur, the territorial council shall nevertheless proceed to the election of the executive council.

In the event of the resignation of the President and of all the Vice-Presidents, the Territorial Council shall be convened by the oldest member, either to proceed with the appointment of the Territorial Councillor provided for in the first paragraph, or to proceed with the renewal of the Executive Council.

En cas de vacance du siège de président pour quelque cause que ce soit, les fonctions de président sont provisoirement exercées par un vice-président, dans l’ordre des nominations et, à défaut, par un conseiller territorial désigné par le conseil. Il est procédé au renouvellement du conseil exécutif, dans le délai d’un mois, selon les modalités prévues à l’article LO 6222-6.

Toutefois, avant ce renouvellement, il est procédé aux élections qui peuvent être nécessaires pour compléter le conseil territorial.

Si, après les élections complémentaires, de nouvelles vacances se produisent, le conseil territorial procède néanmoins à l’élection du conseil exécutif.

En cas de démission du président et de tous les vice-présidents, le conseil territorial est convoqué par le doyen d’âge, soit pour procéder à la désignation du conseiller territorial prévu au premier alinéa, soit pour procéder au renouvellement du conseil exécutif.
