Article R2-21 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The request provided for in the second paragraph of III of Article 15-4 is sent by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt or by delivery to the clerk’s office against a receipt. Where the person is detained, the request is lodged in accordance with the provisions of the tenth paragraph of article 81.
