When a midwife is called to attend a patient who is being cared for by another midwife, she must comply with the following rules:
1° If the patient intends to forego the care of the first midwife, she must ascertain the patient’s express wish and provide the necessary care;
2° If the patient has simply wished to seek advice without changing midwife, she shall offer her a joint consultation; if the patient refuses, she shall give her advice and, if necessary, provide the necessary emergency care; with the patient’s agreement, she shall inform the attending midwife;
3° If the patient, due to the absence of the usual midwife, has called in another midwife, the latter must provide the examinations and care during this absence, cease them as soon as the usual midwife returns and give the latter, in agreement with the patient, all information useful for continuing the care;
4° If the midwife has been sent to the patient by another midwife who is temporarily unable to attend, she may under no circumstances consider the patient as her client.
In the cases provided for in 2° and 3°, if the patient refuses, the midwife must inform her of the consequences that this refusal may entail.
The midwife called in must refrain from derogatory remarks or any criticism of the care previously given.
