Article R4227-44 of the French Labour Code

To ensure the prevention of and protection against explosions, the employer shall take the technical and organisational measures appropriate to the type of operation on the basis of the principles of prevention and in the following order of priority:
1° Prevent the formation of explosive atmospheres;
2° If the nature of the activity makes it impossible to prevent the formation of explosive atmospheres, prevent their ignition;
3° Mitigate the harmful effects of an explosion on the health and safety of workers.

Afin d’assurer la prévention des explosions et la protection contre celles-ci, l’employeur prend les mesures techniques et organisationnelles appropriées au type d’exploitation sur la base des principes de prévention et dans l’ordre de priorité suivant :
1° Empêcher la formation d’atmosphères explosives ;
2° Si la nature de l’activité ne permet pas d’empêcher la formation d’atmosphères explosives, éviter leur inflammation ;
3° Atténuer les effets nuisibles d’une explosion pour la santé et la sécurité des travailleurs.
