I. – Birth centres are facilities in which midwives provide :
1° Medical supervision of pregnancy and the aftermath of childbirth as defined in article L. 2122-1 ;
2° Preparation for birth and parenthood, taking into account the overall support needs of future parents;
3° Childbirth and postnatal care for mother and child.
Birthing centres provide accommodation for mothers and newborns only during childbirth and for the purposes of post-natal monitoring.
Birth centres may also carry out the additional activities mentioned in article L. 6323-4-1.
II. – Subject to the following paragraphs, birthing centres do not deal with obstetric emergencies, as defined within the framework of the emergency obstetrics units provided for in article R. 6123-43.
The conditions under which they are organised and run guarantee :
1° The availability of their staff to take charge, at any time, of the childbirth of women registered in the structure ;
2° The first response to complications arising during labour and delivery on their premises, before transfer, if necessary, of the pregnant woman or the newborn to the partner health establishment.
