Article 1416 of the French Civil Code

The community which has discharged a debt for which it could be sued by virtue of the preceding articles is nevertheless entitled to a reward, whenever this commitment had been contracted in the personal interest of one of the spouses, as well as for the acquisition, conservation or improvement of a property of its own.

La communauté qui a acquitté une dette pour laquelle elle pouvait être poursuivie en vertu des articles précédents a droit néanmoins à récompense, toutes les fois que cet engagement avait été contracté dans l’intérêt personnel de l’un des époux, ainsi pour l’acquisition, la conservation ou l’amélioration d’un bien propre.
