Article 1511 of the French Civil Code

The spouses may stipulate that the survivor of either of them, or one of them if he or she survives, or even one of them in all cases of dissolution of the community, shall have the option of taking certain community property, on condition that he or she take account of it in the community according to the value it will have on the day of the partition, if it has not been otherwise agreed.

Les époux peuvent stipuler que le survivant d’eux ou l’un d’eux s’il survit, ou même l’un d’eux dans tous les cas de dissolution de la communauté, aura la faculté de prélever certains biens communs, à charge d’en tenir compte à la communauté d’après la valeur qu’ils auront au jour du partage, s’il n’en a été autrement convenu.
