Article 312 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

Subject to the provisions of Article 309, the public prosecutor and the parties’ lawyers may put questions directly to the accused, the civil party, the witnesses and all persons called to the stand, by asking the president to speak.

The accused and the civil party may also put questions through the president.

Sous réserve des dispositions de l’article 309, le ministère public et les avocats des parties peuvent poser directement des questions à l’accusé, à la partie civile, aux témoins et à toutes les personnes appelées à la barre, en demandant la parole au président.

L’accusé et la partie civile peuvent également poser des questions par l’intermédiaire du président.
